The Health Systems Agency of Northern Virginia has recommended approval of Prince William Health System’s proposal to build a hospital in the Haymarket area.

At a public hearing last night in Haymarket, the Health Services Agency of Northern Virginia (HSANV) listened to two different proposals for building a hospital in Western Prince William County. Both Prince William Hospital System (which merged with Novant Health) and Sentara introduced their building proposals to the agency, and the public chimed in for their support on either site.

Everyone who spoke at a Health Systems Agency of Northern Virginia public hearing Monday agreed that a hospital is needed in the Haymarket area.

A battle over two new hospital proposals has taken center stage in Prince William County. Sentara Healthcare and Prince William Health System (PWHS) are both proposing to build a new state-of-the-art hospital in the Gainesville-Haymarket area.

Show Your Support For Your
New Hospital In Haymarket

All of us at Prince William Health System are excited about our application with the State of Virginia to build a new 60-bed hospital on the 38-acre site in Haymarket, Virginia. The new hospital will be located on the current Heathcote Health Center site.

This proposed hospital is part of Prince William Hospital's longstanding commitment to providing healthcare for the Gainesville and Haymarket communities. We are the only health system currently providing healthcare services in Haymarket through our Heathcote Health Center, which opened in June 2008.

The New Hospital Will Enhance Healthcare Services
In The Area

Currently, Heathcote provides 24-hour, seven-day a week emergency care from its freestanding Emergency Services Department facility.  In 2009, more than 13,000 patients were treated by the ER.  Heathcote also offers comprehensive medical imaging as well as a laboratory services for blood work.  A number of physician specialties also have offices in the Heathcote facility.

Plans for the new hospital are to have 60 all private rooms, including 12 labor, delivery and recovery rooms and eight Intensive Care beds.  Assuming the approval process moves forward as planned, the opening date for the new hospital is scheduled for early 2015.

Prince William Health System Is The Leading Provider Of Healthcare In The Haymarket / Gainesville Area

Haymarket and western Prince William County has experienced tremendous population growth.  In 1997, in response to the healthcare needs of residents in the area, Prince William Health System opened a spacious medical center on Lee Highway.  The Prince William Medical Center provided convenient local care for residents for many years. That facility has became home to a variety of physician specialties.

In February 2007, The Cancer Center at Lake Manassas opened, providing radiation therapy services to cancer patients in the area. The Center, located in Gainesville, is a partnership between Prince William and Fauquier Hospitals. Both hospitals had worked together for years to bring radiation therapy to the area.

In July 2009, Prince William merged with Novant Health, which has committed more than $240 million in resources to help strengthen our health system.  Since then, we have moved ahead with plans to build new facilities and offer much needed services to the community.  Prince William recently received approval from the state to build a state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization lab on the Manassas campus. The 4,334-square-foot catheterization lab is expected to open in early 2011.

Haymarket area residents are aware of Prince William's commitment to providing community based healthcare and have been urging us for years to build a new hospital. Through our merger with Novant, we are able to move ahead with this long-planned project.
