The Health Systems Agency of Northern Virginia has recommended approval of Prince William Health System’s proposal to build a hospital in the Haymarket area.

At a public hearing last night in Haymarket, the Health Services Agency of Northern Virginia (HSANV) listened to two different proposals for building a hospital in Western Prince William County. Both Prince William Hospital System (which merged with Novant Health) and Sentara introduced their building proposals to the agency, and the public chimed in for their support on either site.

Everyone who spoke at a Health Systems Agency of Northern Virginia public hearing Monday agreed that a hospital is needed in the Haymarket area.

A battle over two new hospital proposals has taken center stage in Prince William County. Sentara Healthcare and Prince William Health System (PWHS) are both proposing to build a new state-of-the-art hospital in the Gainesville-Haymarket area.

What's The Buzz?

There is a lot of excitement about bringing a new convenient, high quality community hospital to residents of western Prince William County. Keep up with what the media and your neighbors are saying by reading comments about the proposed Haymarket Hospital here. Check in frequently to get the firsthand buzz.

Here's what people are saying:

"At the present time those in need of hospital services face lengthy travel time to Prince William Hospital and even further to other providers. Heavy traffic in the area exacerbates the problem of getting to the hospital." Resident of Heritage Hunt, Gainesville

"My family and I have experienced the timely, professional, and caring service of both Prince William Hospital's main location in Manassas and the Heathcote Health Center in Haymarket and relish the possibility you will approve a new hospital in our area of western Prince William. Prince William Hospital's application and approval can totally fulfill the needs of the community. I respectfully suggest and 80-100 bed facility with potential expansion capabilities at the site of the existing Heathcote Health Center would be ideal to serve the growing area. "Western Prince William resident

"I have lived in this area for Prince William County for 30 years and have experienced the population explosion making it necessary for a hospital in this vicinity. Prince William Health System has the land necessary for a hospital with a diagnostic center and emergency room already in place. The doctors on the staff of Prince William Hospital are the physician's people in this area use. We are already in the data base of the existing hospital." Prince William County resident

"With all the growth, as you can imagine, the traffic is phenomenal—on local roads as well as on primary routes and interstates—with most households having 2 or more vehicles and 2 or more wage earners. PWHS' hospital in Haymarket (close to major roads & direct access for other) will give the community better, easier and quicker access to services. There are a few commuter buses and trains, but for the most part, people drive. Some roads have been improved but everything is likely to stop for years—given the current budget situation." Local employer

"Haymarket and the surrounding area are growing quickly. The population has increased rapidly. Included in the growth are several senior communities. The need for additional medical services is clearly indicated. Prince William Hospital in Manassas is difficult to reach because of traffic. A hospital at the Heathcote location would provide quick access to medical treatment for the many residents of Haymarket, Gainesville and the adjoining areas. Senior citizen from Gainesville

"Virginia Radiology Associates has been a longstanding supporter of Prince William Health System, and we are willing to provide coverage for both hospitals. The Manassas and Haymarket sites of Prince William Hospital will be able to share medical staffs, and many physicians groups already have offices at both locations. The Haymarket hospital will help to attract needed new physicians to the area, an initiative that is also strongly support by Prince William Hospital's existing medical staff."  Twenty-five radiologists of Virginia Radiology Associates.

"I am currently a volunteer at the Heathcote Health Center in Haymarket. I have been there since the opening when there were very few patients. However, that is not the case now, 18 months later. It is my understanding the number of patients has more than doubled the expectation. You can see the need for more community healthcare in this area. I live in the neighborhood and see firsthand a need for more healthcare service as this is one of the fastest growing areas in the state. Prince William Hospital volunteer

"There are so many physicians locating in our county now and that is a great plus, but they are going to need good facilities in which to treat their patients. Our new Heathcote Health Center is a wonderful facility and to have a new hospital located near it would attract more and better doctors." Former Prince William Hospital patient

"We would like to express our support for Prince William Hospital's efforts to build a hospital in Prince William County. A new hospital will be a tremendous benefit to the many individuals in our growing community." Prince William County-Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce
